Across 12 months of tracking AI-referred Shopify revenue, the answer isn't what most store owners expect. ChatGPT sends more volume. Perplexity sends higher-converting buyers. The right answer for your store depends on your category and average order value.

The raw numbers

Looking at a cohort of Shopify stores across categories — apparel, supplements, home goods, electronics accessories, pet products — the referral split by platform in late 2025 through early 2026 looks roughly like this:

  • ChatGPT: Highest raw referral volume. A supplement brand in this cohort was getting 280 monthly sessions from ChatGPT versus 90 from Perplexity.
  • Perplexity: Smaller volume but 60-70% higher conversion rates than ChatGPT. Perplexity buyers click through with the source link visible — they know they're following an AI citation.
  • Claude: Lowest raw volume but highest average order value. Claude sends buyers further along in their decision process.
  • Gemini and Copilot: Volumes vary by category. For stores with strong Google Merchant Center presence, Gemini can match or exceed Perplexity in raw sessions.

What this means for your category

For high-volume, lower-AOV products (apparel, accessories, consumables), ChatGPT's volume advantage matters more. For higher-AOV, considered purchases (furniture, equipment, premium supplements, electronics), Perplexity and Claude's conversion quality often generates more total revenue despite lower volume.

Real comparison from one store

A yoga equipment brand tracked their AI referrals for Q4 2025. ChatGPT sent 340 sessions, 18 converted at an average of $160 — $2,880 total. Perplexity sent 95 sessions, 9 converted at an average of $210 — $1,890 total. Similar revenue, different math. But when they looked at 90-day repeat purchase rates, Perplexity customers came back at nearly double the rate of ChatGPT customers. The lifetime value math changed the decision entirely.
