ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Copilot all have different crawling behaviors. Understanding how each platform accesses your Shopify store — and where the gaps are — lets you optimize specifically for each one and stop blocking AI traffic you're not even aware of.

How ChatGPT crawls

OpenAI uses two main crawlers: GPTBot for training data collection, and ChatGPT-User for live browsing queries. GPTBot runs continuously and builds the training corpus. ChatGPT-User runs on-demand when a user asks ChatGPT a browsing-enabled question. Both respect your robots.txt — if you block GPTBot, you're blocking your store from future ChatGPT training data updates. If you block ChatGPT-User, live browsing queries won't fetch your content.

Many Shopify apps add robots.txt blocks for unknown user agents, which inadvertently blocks both OpenAI crawlers. Check your robots.txt at yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for any blanket "Disallow: /" rules or user-agent blocks.

How Perplexity crawls

Perplexity uses PerplexityBot for its continuous web index and makes real-time retrieval calls when answering user queries. PerplexityBot is particularly active — it recrawls content frequently to keep its index current. This means fresh content gets indexed by Perplexity faster than by most other AI platforms. Publishing new content and getting Perplexity to pick it up can happen within days. Ensure PerplexityBot isn't blocked and that your content renders cleanly in server-side HTML.

How Claude and Gemini crawl

Anthropic (Claude) uses ClaudeBot for training data collection. Claude's recommendations are more heavily training-data-influenced than Perplexity's, so getting into Anthropic's training corpus requires a strong, stable web presence over time rather than just technical accessibility. Gemini uses Googlebot and Google's full index — making your Shopify store Google-indexable is the foundation of Gemini visibility.

How to audit your crawler accessibility

View your robots.txt and check for blocks on: GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Anthropic-AI, Googlebot, Bingbot. Then use your server access logs (if available through your hosting) to see which crawlers are actually visiting your site. If you see zero visits from GPTBot over 30 days, something is blocking it. Fix that before investing in any content work — because content that can't be crawled can't be cited.
