Claude is the AI assistant that is least likely to recommend a store it doesn't trust. That makes it the most valuable citation you can earn. A Shopify brand that cracked Claude's recommendation logic added $5,500 per month in new revenue from a channel that most of their competitors weren't even tracking.

Claude recommends differently than ChatGPT

ChatGPT will often recommend stores that have strong SEO presence and broad online mentions. Claude applies more friction. It tends to withhold specific brand recommendations when it isn't confident, often saying something like "I'd recommend researching several brands" rather than naming one — unless the store has earned enough trust signals for Claude to cite it specifically.

This means Claude's recommendations are rarer, but when they happen, they carry more weight. A buyer who gets a specific store recommendation from Claude has been through a more considered filter.

The trust signals Claude weights

  • Editorial mentions in trustworthy publications: Claude's training data includes a large corpus of editorial content. Stores mentioned in respected publications get a meaningful boost in Claude's confidence.
  • Transparent, specific content: Vague marketing language actively reduces Claude's confidence. Specific, accurate product information increases it.
  • Clear business identity: A real About page, a named founder or team, a physical address or clear origin story. Claude trusts stores that present themselves as real businesses.
  • Consistent brand signals: If your brand name appears consistently across your website, social media, press mentions, and review sites — all saying the same things — Claude's confidence in recommending you increases.

The Shopify brand that cracked it

They sold premium kitchen knives. Their existing content was standard e-commerce copy — feature bullets, lifestyle photos, "order today" CTAs. They rewrote their product pages to read like a culinary educator had written them: steel composition, heat treatment specifics, how to maintain the edge, which knife for which task. They updated their About page to tell the actual founding story. They got mentioned in two food publications.

Within six weeks, Claude was recommending their chef's knife in response to queries like "what chef's knife do professional cooks actually use at home." $5,500 in attributed revenue the following month.

The test you can run today

Open Claude and ask: "What's the best [your product] for [your target buyer]?" If your store doesn't appear and a competitor does, ask a follow-up: "What do you know about [competitor brand]?" The answer will tell you exactly what kind of content Claude trusts enough to cite.
