Before you can grow AI-referred revenue, you need to know what you're already getting. Most Shopify stores are receiving traffic from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Copilot right now and have no idea — because they've never filtered their analytics to look.

The referrer domains to track

Each AI platform sends traffic with a recognizable referrer. Here are the domains to watch:

  • ChatGPT: chat.openai.com, chatgpt.com
  • Perplexity: perplexity.ai
  • Claude: claude.ai
  • Gemini: gemini.google.com
  • Copilot: copilot.microsoft.com, bing.com (Copilot-assisted queries)

In Shopify Analytics, go to Reports then Traffic sources. You can filter or search by these referrer domains to see sessions, orders, and revenue attributed to each platform.

Setting up proper tracking

Shopify's native analytics will capture most AI referral traffic automatically — as long as the referrer header is passed correctly. For more granular tracking, add UTM parameters to any links you control. For stores using Google Analytics 4, create a custom channel grouping for AI referrals. Set up a segment that includes all five AI platform domains so you can track AI referral revenue as a single channel with sub-breakdowns by platform.

What to measure beyond sessions

  • Conversion rate by platform: Perplexity typically converts higher than ChatGPT. Claude typically converts highest of all.
  • Average order value by platform: AI-referred orders often have 1.5-2x the AOV of Google organic.
  • Product mix: Which products are being recommended by AI? This tells you what categories AI trusts your store for.
  • Return rate: AI-referred buyers typically have lower return rates — track this to understand the quality of AI-driven sales.

The 15-minute setup

Open Shopify Analytics right now. Go to Reports, then Traffic sources. Search for "openai" and "perplexity" and "claude.ai." Write down the numbers you see — sessions, orders, revenue — for the past 30 days. That's your baseline. Check it again in 30 days after making content changes. The delta is your ROI signal.
