How to Write Product Descriptions That AI Platforms Cite
Most Shopify product descriptions are written to convince a human who's already on the product page. AI platforms need something different — and the format that earns AI citations also converts human buyers better.
Most Shopify product descriptions are written to convince a human who's already on the product page. AI platforms need something different — and the format that earns AI citations also converts human buyers better. A Shopify home goods store rewrote 20 product descriptions using this framework and went from $1,200/month to $9,400/month in AI-referred revenue in 90 days.
What AI needs from product descriptions
AI platforms are trying to answer buyer questions. When a buyer asks ChatGPT "what's the best cast iron skillet for searing steak," ChatGPT needs a source that directly answers that question. A product description that says "premium cast iron, perfect for all cooking styles" answers nothing. A description that says "10-inch preseasoned cast iron, 5mm thick walls for even heat retention, seasoned with flaxseed oil — ideal for high-heat searing, oven roasting to 700°F, and stovetop braising" gives ChatGPT exactly what it needs to cite this product in a searing query.
The AI-citation product description structure
Follow this structure for every product page:
- Lead with the primary use case and who it's for: "Ideal for X buyers who need Y" — one specific sentence that establishes exactly what this product is and who benefits from it.
- Specific technical specifications: Materials, dimensions, weights, capacities, ratings. Every measurable attribute. Don't round up — be precise.
- Mechanism of benefit: Why does this product work? Not "premium quality" but "the 18/10 stainless steel construction means no flavor transfer and no rusting even with acidic foods."
- Honest limitation statement: What is this product not for? "Not recommended for induction cooking" or "best results on gas or electric, not ideal for high-BTU commercial burners." AI trusts brands that acknowledge limits.
- Comparison context: How does this compare to common alternatives? Not bashing competitors — but positioning context like "similar to standard stainless but with 40% thicker gauge for heat retention."
The rewrite that drove $9,400/month
The home goods store rewrote their cast iron, stainless steel, and ceramic cookware descriptions using this exact structure. Within 30 days, ChatGPT was citing their products in comparison queries, material-specific queries, and use-case queries. Within 90 days, AI referral revenue had gone from $1,200 to $9,400/month. The rewrite took one full day per product line.
Start with your top 5
Rewrite your five best-selling products using this structure this week. Don't try to do all 50 SKUs at once — start where the revenue is. Those five pages, rewritten correctly, will generate enough AI referral data to prove the ROI before you expand to your full catalog.
